Should there be cognitive requirements for public office?

  • Yes / No

If yes:

Goal

Looking for simple, honest input. Not debating here, just collecting perspectives.

Common Objections

  • Founding principles was such that maintaining favor with your constituency was in effect the term limit.
  • The incentives to work for the people are diminished if at end of term.
  • Those terming out begin to lose influence, thus diminishing their positions of power.

Yes to term limits. Perhaps also a reduced wage and ban on insider trading. No term limits for SCOTUS, but a firm code of conduct with review, and imposed by (perhaps) the Senate Judiciary Committee, and requiring a filibuster proof vote. But it needs to be partisan-proof. As for cognitive tests, I think it’s a great idea. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment is a great option, but anything that assesses memory, attention, language, and executive function. And, better than having these be imposed, it may be better for them to be popularized so that there is social pressure to A) participate and B) share findings.
